WHERE WE STARTED
White Wave Longboards was born from the belief that everyone deserves to feel what it is like to catch the perfect wave on concrete. Josh, founding partner and head designer at WW has been longboarding since the early 90’s. Over the years he rode lots of different types of boards from various companies. He quickly realized that there was one major difference between the boards that felt good and the boards that felt cheap and second-rate.
The difference between a board that felt like you were riding down a rough rocky mountain road and a board that made you feel like you were on newly paved asphalt, was the price. It was impossible to find a board that had that awesome feel and did not kill the bank. He decided to make this happen and took this challenge to heart.
Like most firefighters struggling to raise a family Josh had a side job. He had been a carpenter for years. He started working in his garage night after night, day after day between jobs building custom boards until each model was perfect. The bed he promised to build his wife became sheets of bamboo and maple stacked up with a mattress on top of the stack. His wife would hold up the mattress for him while he pulled another sheet of wood out to build more prototypes. Neighborhood kids and firefighters became his test riders.
The next step was to find a manufacturer that could match the custom quality and keep the cost down. Josh would send his custom boards to LOTS of different manufacturers and challenge them to reproduce his quality. Finally he found a match. The only problem was the manufacturer required a high volume order to get a satisfying price. Josh was raising a family on a firefighters salary and didn’t have the money to purchase that kind of volume, but was not willing to give up on his dream.
Another firefighter, Chuck, was intrigued with this cool endeavor. Chuck had some success in business and had partners that were skilled in management, finances, and sales. The partners recognized Josh’s talent and craftsmanship. Most of all they saw his passion for quality. White Wave formed with the goal to make an awesome board that anyone can afford.
In 2014 the first boards rolled off the production line and they have not looked back since. Mission accomplished! Now EVERYONE, wealthy or not, can enrich their lives and feel what it’s like to glide on water by riding a White Wave Longboard.
